Dampak Politik Ledakan Mega Kuningan

Jakartans unperturbed by bombings

The Jakarta Post website, 19 July 2009
“Friday’s twin bombings have prompted security to be tightened across the city, but residents remain largely undaunted by the possibility of another attack.”
- - -
I think there are several possible reasons for this.
First, probably people considered the blasts weren’t too serious. They were low explosives, and this is reflected in the lower number of casualties, compared to the Bali bombing.
Second, people may think they weren’t the target. Several bombings that have occurred in Indonesia happened to similar targets. In Bali it suffered twice, so did the Mega Kuningan area. So, there are similar patterns.
Third, people are plainly being ignorant of their lives. They would leave their lives to chance. They think in their minds that terror, as is death itself, is unpredictable, and when it comes, it comes. It’s inevitable. They also think that what happened that target was a very rare flaw in security. And there is a slim chance a terror attack would happened to them. After all, I do believe this, more people dies from car accidents than terror attacks in average.
Fourth, people are confident of the security measures enforced at those public places. And when they are not at places where the security is not enforced, they think the place wouldn’t be a suitable target for attacks.
Lastly, this is a possible reason I find a bit sad, but I can strangely understand. People just got used to terrors. They think there’s no point in letting fear control them most of times, so they just cope with it. They think is a part of everyday living in Indonesia.
These are possible reasons I can currently think of. They may be true, or not. They may work simultaneously in people’s mind, although I think not in the same amount of consideration in each people.

Police Detain Suspects in Freeport Killings

(JAKARTA) — Police detained 17 suspects believed to be involved in a series of deadly ambushes at the world's largest gold mine earlier this month, a spokesman said Tuesday.

I presumed Indonesia contained various terror groups each with different strategy and goals. But the means used are the same, acts of violence. And on the two terror groups, they are similar in that they involved foreign victims. Anyway, I didn’t know Suharto’s dictatorship was backed by US. Then, they probably dislike us now.
“It is unclear who was behind the ambushes, but Arizona-based Freeport has been targeted with arson, roadside bombs and blockades since production began in the 1970s during the U.S.-backed Suharto dictatorship.”
